Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards

Amiga game review, ADF downloads, screenshots, ratings and insights
This “little” gem (sorry, Larry, people talk) was the first in what became a fully fledged franchise brand.

Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards was a first of for many things for the experienced yet still blossoming Sierra, back in 1987. For one, it brought a new adventure engine into the mix for Sierra's growing library of adventure games. Secondly, it splattered adult content onto people’s computer screens in a way never really conceived of previously: Larry provided a very healthy dose of bathroom humor and raunchy male chauvinism to a mostly sexually repressed male audience. And a hit was born (whoops!).

Is it something you’d want your daughter playing? Probably not, but if you don’t take it too seriously (Sierra didn’t seem to until the revenue figures rolled in) then you can have a pretty good laugh. Larry Laffer was THE original 40 Year Old Virgin. Indeed, that’s the whole point of the game - you have 24 hours for Larry to get some…thing.

To bring the adult theme further home, take a look at the screenshots that accompany this page. Yes, that’s Larry running and jumping trying to catch a naked female floating across the title screen. Actually, that’s probably a blow-up doll.

Within the first 10 minutes of playing the game, you’re telling Larry to “use toilet” where he proceeds to take a dump while reading a newspaper. For a long time. Did I mention this takes place in the town of Lost Wages (Las Vegas)? Oh, ho ho.

If you were a kid in 1987, this game was challenging to say the least for you to explain to your mom when she walked into your room unannounced and asked about it. It was definitely forbidden fruit and a guilty pleasure. Was it as good as finding a porn magazine in the garage under that box? Hell no, but it did make you feel like you were playing a game for much older people than you. "Maybe that's why I suck at this game, because I don't know how to have 'relations with a lady', either..." No, it's just hard at times (ba-dum-dum), it's not you.

The whole game’s theme is so novel and, at the time, so shocking that it even warns users that it might not be appropriate for some children. To protect America's children (our future!), in order start the game it had a bizarre and fun age authentication quiz where players would be asked five questions that only an adult would be able to answer, or so they thought. Simple and joking questions like:

Q: ”Where's the..."
A: Beef

Q: How many molecules are there in a glass of water?
A: As many as there are.

Q: If a physician were on an island with Bo Derek, he would
A: Thank god.

And so on… Honestly, the game was so cruel at times and so easy to be killed in, it didn’t so much matter (or at least softened the blow) when you got five new authentication questions to answer.

At one point, if you enter a dark alley when you aren’t supposed to, you get beaten to death by some brute with a club. Not pleasant, no. But then you find yourself underground in a Leisure Suit Larry factory! There you get to see several Larry clones being assembled, the Sierra logo on the the wall.

The game’s humor mixed with the (for the times) risqué subject matter really make for an enjoyable game. You easily forget that the game was is displayed in a paltry 16 colors, because it kind of goes with the gaudy theme and style. Ultimately, you'll lose yourself in the “quest” that Larry, and you, have begun.

Back of the box

Meet Larry.

He's just turned 40, and he's still single. If you can get past the glow of his Grecian formula, you can see his hairline beginning to make a hasty retreat from his forehead. Larry's leisure suit is of the highest quality (100% manmade material, permanent press too!). He wears at least 11 gold chains and his freshly-capped teeth could blind you in a bright light.

Down at the singles bar he tells the chicks, "Sure, I'm single...I got in a fight with my ol' lady and she threw me out." He doesn't tell them the "ol' lady" was his mother, or that he was 38 at the time.

Yeah, Larry’s a jerk.

He's the original blind date nightmare.

The kind of guy you wouldn't want your daughter to date, let alone meet. But he's also the unlikely "hero" of this new 3-D Animated Adventure Game from the makers of the King's Quest series.

3-D Equals
Dancing, Drinking and Dames!

Become the loveable [sic] nerd Larry for one fabulous night. You'll dance. You'll drink. You'll gamble. And, if you play your cards right, you might even meet the girl (or girls) of your dreams.

Leisure Suit Larry is a humorous, harmless endeavor for adults. The object of the game is to help Larry overcome his jerkisms and lose his "you-know-what." It's a silly, risque romp through the singles scene and a challenging adventure game that will test your street smarts and suave sophistication.

So, slip into your leisure suit and venture out into "the land of the lounge lizards." We guarantee it'll be a night you will never forget.

A new 3-D Animated Adventure Game featuring:

  • Animated characters that come alive; they walk, talk, lounge, and even ignore your best pick up lines - just life in real life.
  • Incredible three-dimensional graphics; move your animated Larry character in front of speeding cabs, into hot tubs, and smoothly around he disco floor - other onscreen characters do the same and more.
  • Communicate using full sentence input and optional joystick. The game understands over 900 words (including some of your four-letter favorites).
