AmigaLove.com is now [more] secure

by intric8 Sat Jun 25, 2016 2:02 pm

I decided to bite the bullet - for the users of AmigaLove.com - and invest in making the site secure. You may notice now that the url has quietly switched from http to https (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure). Http still works, but the new default is https. If you're in Firefox or Chrome, you should start to see a pretty little lock icon next to the URL when you visit.

So, what does that mean and why should you care?

First and foremost it means hosting AmigaLove.com is a bit more expensive [slow trombone]. And, by that I mean about double. But that's not really important at this time.

What is important is that all communications between your browser and the site are now encrypted, which means the site is as secure as it can be when you're here. But it's also very secure when you share information with AmigaLove.com (like your browsing history, private messages, user profile, etc.).

"This is a little retro-computing site, who cares?" Well, I do. If we ever create a store or donation process in the future (not any time soon, and maybe never, but who knows?), you'll never have to worry about your data being stolen or a scammer working his way into the process.

There is also a potential for a very teeny tiny boost in SEO rankings, but I'm not holding my breath there. Bottom line: this investment is more about users having a safe and secure place to hang out. Period.
